Wellshire Kids' Dinosaur Shapes Chicken Bites- mis-labeled and are NOT gluten free!

A recent article by the Chicago Tribune reveled that Wellshire Kids' Dinosaur Shapes Chicken Bites have been found to CONTAIN Gluten, and even "high amounts of gluten"!!- Even though they are labeled Gluten-Free! I eat these all the time- and always question "where have I eaten out in the past few days" always questioning cross-contamination of the places I eat out, while fully trusting the food I make in my own kitchen... I am shocked and appalled by this investigation, and find myself now questioning every "gluten-free" lable I see on a package. The FDA really needs to come in to regulate labeling of GF products and come up with a standard of what can and can not be considered Gluten-Free!!

Here is the link for the full article (and I have copied the most shocking part!),0,506031.story?page=1

"To determine the full scope of the problem, the Tribune created an unprecedented computer database of 2,800 recalls related to food allergies over the last 10 years. The newspaper found that roughly five products a week are recalled because of hidden allergens, making it one of the top reasons any consumer product in America is recalled. But that doesn't mean the government or companies are vigilant.Take the example of Peggy Pridemore, a Kentucky woman who bought Wellshire Kids' Dinosaur Shapes Chicken Bites because her son Patrick has a severe wheat allergy. Bold letters on the packaging said the item was "gluten free," or contained no wheat, rye and barley proteins. After Patrick, then 3, ate the nuggets in December, he started coughing, his eyes swelled and he had trouble breathing. His mom jabbed his leg with a large needle containing epinephrine, a drug to help him breathe, then raced him to the hospital, where he recovered in the emergency room.Pridemore said she contacted both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the food manufacturer and that neither offered to test the chicken nuggets. The Tribune recently bought the product on two occasions at a River Forest supermarket and sent the samples to one of the nation's leading food-allergy labs, at the University of Nebraska. Both times, the lab found gluten. The item remains on shelves across the U.S."

Gluten Free in Saratoga Springs NY

My Trip to Saragota Springs NY!

So I had to go to Saratoga Springs for a conference this weekend, and I did some researching on where to eat Gluten Free there, and found a great blog which used to be the Gluten Free Saratoga blog here on blogspot- definitely check it out if you are visiting Saratoga.

For Dinner the first night we went to Cantina, on Broadway. Cantina is a Mexican restaurant that is fairly new in Saratoga (it opened a few years ago I believe). Many of the dishes were made with corn tortillas and the chips put on the table were GF as well! They had so many options, including chicken NACHOS that were fabulous!!! I was so full after eating there, I had so much to take home. Our waitress told us that they were looking to do more GF, seeing how so much of there stuff is already naturally GF anyway- that would be AWESEOME… so definitely visit Cantina!

phone: 518.587.5577

The next night I went to Circus Cafe . Circus Cafe has a GF menu (note that they do list items that go in a fryer, but warn that other Gluten-containing items go in it, so I avoided them)… I got a Circus Burger, without a bun, and a salad on the side. For dessert- and this was the BEST part, I got a warm hot chocolate pudding cake! (yes, GF flourless cake!) this cake was served warm with hot pudding inside, and got a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side- IT WAS DELISIOUS!!! I couldn’t believe it- it was SO good, and we had the BEST (and most friendly) waiter I have ever had! (and loved that his “circus” shirt said “I used to be a contortionist”! ha ha) you have to check it out!
Circus Cafe
392 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866

I also went to Nunzios- as recommended by the Saratoga Blog… Now, I was there I was “information gathering” to come back for dinner or lunch the next day. I was walking around the store/restaurant and just happened to be there while they were getting a delivery of “Saratoga Gluten Free Goods, LLC” products. I was so happy to be there right as all these wonderful things were coming in. The best thing I got was the “Gluten Free Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars” They were DELISIOUS!!! I also got Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies, Gluten Free Multi Grain Sandwich Rolls, and Gluten Free Potato Bread. ALL were great! I wish I picked up more, because they said they do not ship- yet-. Hopefully they will in the future! The only information I have on them is
Their blog:
Saratoga Gluten Free Goods, LLC
PO Box 946, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, (518) -681-1707
They also carry their products at:
Wild Thyme Whole Food and Tea Company -108 Milton Avenue, Ballston Spa, NY 518.885.7275 (which is a GREAT health food store! I go every time I’m up in Saratoga!)

Now, while I am raving about Saratoga Gluten Free Goods, I can not say the same for Nunzios Pizza and Deli. While I was paying for all the goodies I was buying, the person ringing me up (I believe the owner), when I asked about ordering a Gluten Free Pizza, and how much lead-time do they need, she shook her head and said not today. The other person there (who was helping with the GF goods) said to her “oh, do you have gluten free pizza today” and the owner said “no, not now”. So when I asked will you have pizza tonight or tomorrow, she shook her head and said “I don’t know”. Then proceeded to tell me (without further asking) that serving gluten free is a pain in the neck for her. It takes her a long time to prepare the GF food because of making sure to wash everything (which for us, is good at least!), etc…, because of the hassle she said she is almost ready to Not do it anymore because people give her grief about waiting so long for GF pizza, and don’t “they” realize that GF is not her primary business and she has a business to run and that is her priority.” I then tried to calm her down (I am a counselor in my day-job), and tell her “of course, I understand, and I thanked her for taking the time to make sure to sanitize the equipment prior to making GF foods” and asked, if I WERE to order a GF pizza, or GF chicken Parm, pasta, etc… tomorrow, how long should I call ahead for? And she said “I don’t know, it gets really busy and it takes a long time and it’s a hassle for me- at least 2 hours, and I don’t know if you should come on a Friday or Saturday night it’s busy”, so when I asked about Saturday lunch, she went on and on again about it being a hassle and “don’t we understand” etc…- to which I finally said “don’t worry, I won’t be back”.
Now, to be a good blogger, I felt I had to let you know that Nunzios currently offers GF pizza- CALL A FEW HOURS AHEAD- and pasta/dishes- (at least as of now, until it finally gets to be TOO MUCH OF A PAIN for her) so while GF is available, I did not go back to try the GF Pizza or other dishes, so I can not report on them.

I can say that the baked GF goods offered by Saratoga Gluten Free Goods there WERE worth the trip into the store- I wished I bought more, so I wasn’t tempted to go back to buy more and have to endure that again! The people delivering the baked goods were VERY nice and the only reason I didn’t walk out without buying anything was the hope that they got the profits, not Nunzios.

If you happen to be visiting Skidmore College the Food Service managers were very knowledge in GF, and that night I was there were even teaching a cooking class for students on Cooking Gluten Free!! How awesome!

And while I didn’t have time to go, I went into Wheatfields to ask about what they have. They have a GF menu, and any of their pasta items can be made with Gluten Free Pasta! They were very friendly when I went in there, and the hostess said for me to tell the server when I sat down that I will be ordering GF pasta so that the cook can start up a new pot/water, etc.. because they cook it from scratch. I will definitely go there next time!

Most or all of our items can be prepared gluten free upon request. . .A steakhouse is the perfect place for someone who needs gluten free food. Steaks are gluten free. We also have appetizers and desserts that are gluten free. . .we only put a little kosher salt on our steaks and broil them. Although the Skirt Steak does have a marinate - soy and spices. We can certainly make adjustments to our dishes such as leaving out flour. . . .We do the best we can to satisfy our customers' requests and we will do what we can. We do not have a pre-prepared gluten-free dinner. . . .I am sure that we could adapt certain dishes when asked to. The problem may come with cross contamination with the use of pans using cooking oil. I have been in business for 25 years and when I have been asked to cook gluten-free, I have been given a list of ingredients and I have accommodated those diners successfully.

New Gluten Free PIZZA in Lynbrook!

I am so excited to announce that Still Riding Pizza (GF) is now available at Elegante Pizza & Restaurant in Lynbrook!
I had been working with Liz at Still Riding Pizza to expand the GF options here on LI, and I brought the info into Dominick at Elegante last week! He contacted Still Riding Pizza and decided to order! I sampled it today and it was DELICIOUS!
Pies are $17, and should be available now. (you can call ahead if you don't want to "wait" for the Pizza to be made, although when we went in there today at lunchtime (it was crowded with the HS students from across the street) and it only took about 10-15 minutes!
When you go, tell Dominick "Sue" told you to stop by. He was skeptical that there are "others" like me that would want GF pizza, but I guess he believed me enough to buy at least one box of GF Pizza from Still Riding! I am hoping that if enough people now go in to request it, that he will see the need, and then I can work on getting more GF items on the menu! HELP by visiting and telling him we want GF!

Gluten Free Shopping Spree

Ok- so I went a little crazy over the weekend with Gluten Free Shopping. Among my usual must-buys, I also found a few new things (some not-so-new, just SO good I had to post them).

Among the NEW things I found :

at Uncle Giuseppes (in Smithtown):

Glenny's Marshmellow Brown Rice Treats (think "rice krispy treats"). These were extremely good, and were $4.49 for 5 bars- and get this, each bar is only 100 calories! (just like the 100 calorie packs popping up everywhere!)

Cherrybrook Kitchen's Gluten Free Dreams Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies- pre-made cookies. OK- I haven't tried these yet, but was so excited to see pre-made cookies by this company, so hopefully they will be just as good as their mixes. (I will update when I try them) They were $3.99 for the box.

Xochitl Organic Blue Corn Chips- These are my absolute FAVORITE Blue Corn Chips- I can eat a whole bag at time! (well, almost)- they are so good you don't even need salsa, guacamole, or any dip (although they do go very well with them)- they are SO delicious I had to post these. a bit pricy for corn chips though, but they are SOOOOOOOO good it's worth it! $6.49

Galbusera- Zero Grano “Wafer Al Cioccolato” and “Frollini”- I only tried the Wafer Al Cioccolato ones so far- but they are GREAT. So yummy! And the best part- they are all in individual “snack” packs inside, so it’s great to thrown in a lunch bag, and take with you and the rest won’t go stale until you finish the rest! $.299 (Wafers), $5.49 (Frollini)

At Fairway (in Plainview):

EnviroKidz- Leapin Lemurs- Chocolate Peanut Butter Cearel- These I've seen a few times-but now is among my favorite cereals (yes, I still love Gorilla Munch!)... They are SO good. $2.49

ThinkThin- White Chocolate Chip- I LOVE these bars- and their new flavor- White Chocolate Chip is GREAT!!! (my second favorite is the Crunchy Peanut Butter!) $1.69

And from B-Well Naturally:

Patsy Pie cookies- Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, and Almond Biscotti’s. These cookies are the BEST I have ever tasted. The Chocolate Chip ones are FABULOUS- I had to re-check the package to make sure they were GF!!! I have only seen these at B-Wells’ so every time I’m there, if they have them, I get them, they are just SO delicious. $6.09 each package

Let me know if you found any new, or not new product that is a MUST try- so I can go get it! I don’t want to waste money on not-so-good GF products anymore!

PS- I’m anxiously awaiting the new “Mary’s Gone Crackers” Sticks and Twigs to be on the shelves of my stores- because I received a sample of these at the Celiac Chicks Chill and Grill BBQ, and they were GREAT!!

The Colin Leslie Walk for Celiac Disease- Rye, NY- Sept 14th

This is a great event. I have gone the past two years, and I always have a good time. Last year, the addition of the workshops was wonderful and the vendor fair was great! It will also be good to meet the new Nutritionist at Columbia- I usually go every summer, but now that Ann was no longer there, I missed this year- so I'm eager to meet her replacement!
Try to make it... here are the details:

New Articles for August

I have posted new articles on my website for August. Check them out!

One of the articles, "Gluten-free diets gaining in popularity" from USA Today states :

"Gluten-free diets are catching on at colleges, says Dee Sandquist, a registered dietitian in Vancouver, Wash., and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.
"There is a fad aspect," says Kupper, who also is a registered dietitian. (Both Kupper and Sandquist have celiac disease.)
What can possibly be behind a fad that has college kids giving up pizza and bagels?

I am totally annoyed that the Gluten-Free Diet is referred to as a "fad", because for those of us who are Celiacs, this is NOT a "fad", it will not "go out of style", nor will we (currently) all of a sudden be able to eat gluten again! The only cure for Celiac Disease is the LIFE LONG remainder on a Gluten-Free Diet! Those that are choosing to eat Gluten-Free for other benefits yes, might be in a "fad" stage, but it gives it a bad name labeling it a "fad". Less food companies will be willing to change their product lines to cater to "fads"- if they think that is what Gluten-Free eating is!
Yes, I intend to write in to the author of the article. :)

Autistic Kids Study on Gluten and Dairy

According to a recent article " Gluten, dairy tested in autistic kids" on, there is a study beginning at the University of Texas Health Science Center that will test the effects on behavior Gluten AND Dairy have on Autistic children. The study is testing the "Casomorphin, a peptide in milk, and gliadomorphin, a peptide in gluten," which "are thought to affect behavior in these children."
The study would eliminate both Milk and Gluten from the diets of the study group for four weeks, then have a control group who will receive gluten/milk pill, and a group that will receive a placebo not containing those ingredients.
It seems silly to me that this study would test both Milk AND Gluten at the same time?!? They should increase their participant pool, and have one group to test the elimination of gluten, one group to test the elimination of milk, and one group to test the elimination of both gluten and milk, while keep the control group on both milk and gluten.
We'll I guess I should be happy that someone is TRYING to find some legitimate correlations to Gluten on Autistic behaviors, at least it's a start.

Celiac Chicks Chill & Grill!

We had a great time at the Celiac Chicks GF "Chill and Grill" today at Mickey Johns in Sunnyside, Queens!

Among the best were the GF dumplings from Lili 57, and S'MAC's mac and cheese! Both of those I had not had before and I was extremely impressed with both! My favorites among the items I have had before, were of course, Smokin Sloes BBQ baked beans, and pulled-chicken, and Grainless Baker's Hamburger buns/Hotdog buns! It was also great being able to get Redbridge Gluten Free Beer at the bar! (note to Budwiser- do NOT discontinue this line of beer- we LOVE IT!)

The day was filled with FABULOUS food, great weather and we got to meet some wonderful people (and fellow bloggers out there ;) , even if they won't get in pics with me!)
CeliacChicks we can't wait until next year!

UPDATE: go to Celiac Chicks blog for awesome pics of the BBQ (and Me!)

New Blog Name:

OK- so now to THROUGHLY confuse people I am moving my old blog ( to to be consistant with my WEBSITE

I am going to still blog, and have this blog featured on my website (because frankly, I like the way Blogger sets up it's blogs as opposed to my hosting site's one, with their advertisements!)... But I didn't want two different names to have to remember, so I am going to work on moving everything over here, so hopefully I won't confuse too many people-

BAD experience at Restaurant in Medford!

Original post from from Wednesday, July 2, 2008:

I learned a disturbing incident last night at the Suffolk County Celiac Support Group meeting...

A fellow Celiac went to KINGS BUFFET, at 3251 Horseblock Road, in Medford recently with her husband and daughter. She was aware that she could not eat anything there, but because her daughter (who is 8) really wanted to go, they decided to go, and Mom would "sit" there to be with them while they enjoyed the meal. When they walked in, they explained that there would be 1 adult, and 1 child eating, and that the Mom would NOT be eating, and that it was because she COULDN'T eat anything, and the manager/owner (?) refused to let her in. When the Mom explained that she had Celiac Disease, and that she would get very sick if she ate anything there, and to "trust her" she was NOT eating there, and not trying to "gain free entry to eat", the woman still refused to let her in, and told her she had to sit outside and wait for them.

So pass the word around to your friends, Celiacs or not, to not patron KINGS BUFFET in Medford.

Mr. Miceli's in RVC has Gluten Free options!

Original post from from Sunday, June 1, 2008:

Mr. Miceli’s Pizzeria in Rockville Centre offers GLUTEN FREE items! According to the menu on the website PointClickEat (type 11570 as the zip and find “Mr. Miceli” for their menu) All of their dishes are available as gluten free & wheat free options with Glutino products (except sandwiches and calzones). I got Chicken Parm with GF Angel Hair Pasta- It was the BEST GF Chicken Parm I have ever had! It tasted just like I remember it used to taste with wheat bread crumbs! The owner has a Wheat Allergy (not Celiac), but was very knowledgeable in cross contamination issues, and said that he is looking to expand the restaurant in about a year to make one side of it ALL gluten free items!

Mr Miceli’s Pizza is located at:

19 North Park Avenue
Rockville Centre, NY 11570

If you visit, tell him Sue "from Lynbrook" told you about it!

Smokin Sloes Southern BBQ- Gluten Free Menu!

Original post from from Sunday, April 27, 2008:

Smokin Sloes Southern BBQ in Northport- Now offers a Gluten Free Menu!

I went there this weekend, and was amazed by the choices! They just had GF menus printed up to make ordering easier, and the owner Roger, was very friendly and when speaking to him about the GF menu, and explaining how the corn bread can NOT go on my plate, he said that they are working on a button in the computer to alert the staff to someone who is eating GF (although, the corn breads were all each individually wrapped, which was a plus to limit the contamination), but I thought it was great that he was being pro-active! I mentioned to him about the GFRAP, so hopefully he will want to become a part of it so that he can become educated in cross-contamination issues! It was a great change of pace to be able to eat somewhere "different".

Original Post from from Tuesday, April 15, 2008:

I have to give my shout outs to for posting about ShopRite of Morton Village in Plainview, on South Oyster Bay Road!!! I had to post this as well, because I didn't want anyone to miss out!

I had shopped there last year, but THIS YEAR they have tons of more gluten free passover products, I almost fell over in the aisle! I was so excited to see a huge gluten free apple pie, the frozen mini eclairs, black and white cookies, rainbow cookies (Fabulous), and some other gluten free products such as the Dr. Pragers potato Littles, the Bell and Evans GF chicken fingers/chicken nuggets and GF passover pizza!

Q & A

Original post from from Sunday, April 6, 2008:

Below are some questions that I have received....

(q) Sue, fellow Celiac person. I'm tired of paying $6.00 for a one pound box of gluten free pasta. Any suggestions where to shop on the Island to buy pasta, etc. at reasonable prices? Thank you,

(a)I have found the Brown Rice Pasta at Trader Joes (various locations in Nassau/Suffolk) to be very reasonable (I believe around $2.50 for 1 lb bag... but I will check that out next time I am there), and The Tinkyada Brown Rice Pasta (16 oz as well ) was on sale for $2.46 (I believe it is a "permanent" sale) at B Well Naturally in Plainview... every time I go there I get that price. I know it's not a .99 cents on sale of Ronzoni Pasta, but like you, when you're used to paying $6, I get excited when it's "only" $2.50.-Sue

Rice Chex now Gluten Free!

Original post from from Friday, April 4, 2008:

Thanks General Mills!!!

Rice Chex Cereal is now Gluten Free!

UPDATE: MAKE SURE TO READ THE LABEL! I went to the store today, and the Rice Chex still contained Barley Malt Flavor! The new boxes are not in all stores yet! Make sure it is the one pictured in the link above (that says "Gluten Free" on the front of the box) and of course always READ every label! . I found out that it's only the 12.8 size box manufactured after Feb 1, 2008. There will be 3 check marks on the box. One of them stating gluten free. As with all reformulated products, both the old and new products may be on store shelves at the same time so please read labels/packaging carefully.

5/13/08I also e-mailed the Reps from GM- regarding the New formula for Berry Berry Kix, that does not contain gluten, but is not labled "Gluten Free"... this was the response:
" Dear Valued Consumer:Thank you for contacting General Mills regarding gluten in Berry Berry Kix cereal and Rice Chex cereal. Rice Chex has been reformulated to insure that it does not include gluten-containing ingredients or have the possibility of cross contact with gluten containing ingredients or products. The malt syrup ingredient was removed. As with all reformulated products, both products may be on store shelves at the same time so consumers are encouraged to read labels/packaging carefully. There are no immediate plans for additional gluten-free labeled cereals. It is our goal to help our consumers determine whether or not they can include our products in their diet. To accurately accomplish this, we believe it is best to refer to the specific ingredients listed on each product package. However, we do understand that ingredients can be confusing, so we want to assure you if the ingredient label does not list wheat, barley, rye, oats or gluten containing ingredients sourced from these grains, then the product would be gluten-free. Sources of gluten are listed on the label even if the source of gluten is part of another ingredient (such as flavoring or spice). Because ingredients may vary from one package to another due to product reformulation, you should use the product's ingredient label to provide you with current and accurate information. "

Responses from Restaurants re: Gluten Free Items

Original post from from Friday, April 4, 2008:

7-9-08 Chipotle Grill- and their allergen listing- " You can eat anything we serve except for our large burrito tortillas, our small soft taco tortillas, and possibly our hot red tomatillo salsa (there is a small amount of distilled vinegar in it which some celiac websites still say might be problematic, although most don't).Everything else is fine for you to eat including our crispy corn tacos, our corn chips, and our burrito bowls (no tortilla). If you are highly sensitive and would like us to change our gloves, we would be happy to do that at your request. Additionally, since there is always the slight possibility of cross-contamination in our restaurants because our folks work with wheat tortillas all day long, we encourage you to consider carefully your dining choices."

3-28-08 Response from Bertucci's -
"Thank you for your inquiry. A variety of items on our menu are suitable for a gluten free diet, though preparation for some items may need to be adjusted. Our Salmon Florentine and any of our salad selections are excellent main course selections. Please be sure to request your salad to be prepared without croutons or breadcrumbs. Our dressings do contain gluten, however, oil and vinegar is available for substitution. Additional options are Mussels Caruso (please be sure to request your Mussels Caruso to be prepared without Crostini), Tuscan Chicken Wings, Roasted Tuscan Vegetables and our Fresh Asparagus. f Please ask for the manager who will be pleased to assist you with suitable selections to meet your dietary needs. Again, thank you for your interest in Bertucci's. We hope you can come and join us for lunch or dinner soon. Alyse Guest Relations "

Gluten Free Easter!

Original Post from from Monday, March 10, 2008:

So, I was at the store today, and looked at a bag of Starburst Jelly Beans that were on sale. I turned the package around to read the label and after reading all the ingredients- I noticed right underneath it said "Gluten-Free"! AWESOME. And a double awesome- Marshmallow Peeps ALSO has "Gluten-Free" on the back now as well! Those were the only 2 I checked, but I am sure that there are more out there labeling!

I love how companies are now making it easier for us to eat!

My thanks to JustBorn Inc ( and MasterFoodsUSA ( for the Gluten-Free Labels! I hope more companies follow your lead!
