Suffolk County Celiacs Support Group to hold 1st meeting of 2011

The Suffolk County Celaics, a local support group (branch of the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG)), is holding its first meeting of the year on February 1, 2011. Support Group meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month (except January and August) at the West Islip Community Center and begin at 7:30pm.

Monthly discussions vary in topics including help for newly diagnosed Celiacs or those beginning a gluten-free diet with the “how-to’s” of the diet, coping with the GF lifestyle, how to read ingredient labels, where to shop and where to eat, and many other discussions related to eating gluten-free. The group also hosts many guest speakers throughout the year, and past speakers have included Dr. Peter Green of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, Dr. David Milikes, a physician from Great Neck who swam Alcatraz to raise money for Celiac Disease Research, and other local Doctors and Nutritionists and those making a difference in the gluten-free community. Most meetings also have a guest vendor who comes with gluten-free samples and an opportunity to purchase new products! They have hosted 4 very successful gluten-free vendor fair/fundraisers with over 60 gluten-free vendors and over 1,600 attendees during the events, the next fair is gearing up for 2012. The annual holiday party in December has become so popular they had to cut the registration off for the past two years because the meeting space can only accommodate 80 members.

February’s meeting will be discussing the topic "Is it really gluten-free?" “We've all noticed the increase in gluten-free products, gluten-free companies and gluten-free restaurants, BUT are they really adhering to the rules for gluten-free?” Which is all about what my last Examiner article was talking about! In addition, the guest vendor will be Joan Popkin from Joan’s GF Great Bakes who will be on hand with samples of her awesome pizza and calzones as a big Thank You to the Long Island Gluten-Free community because she won 1stplace in the Best of Long Island awards by the Long Island Press!

New members are always welcome!
